There are one million different ways to get new clients for your business, but in my experience of growing service based businesses, there are only four cost and time efficient marketing methods for attracting new clients. These four methods are the best ways to get new clients for your business and I am going to share them with you now.
My name is Nick Jervis, and before launching my marketing consultancy in 2003, I was a solicitor for 14 years. Throughout the time that I was a solicitor I also carried out the marketing of legal services. It was in doing this that I discovered my real joy in work came not from working on client files, but by putting in place marketing systems that delivered a steady and consistent flow of new clients to my firm.
I revelled in testing new marketing initiatives; some flew, some bombed.
Since I set up my marketing consultancy in 2003 I believe that I have tried and tested every marketing method available to a service business owner.
- Television advertising (several hundred thousands of your finest British pounds)
- Radio advertising (smaller than TV, but still a good marketing spend)
- PR (£5,000 per month with a top London Agency)
- Google Ads (several hundred thousand pounds)
- Facebook advertising
- National Newspaper Advertising
You name it, I have tried it and tested it. A lot of this spend was my own spend not client money as I have launched several separate companies selling legal services and promoted them.
In all of these tests, I have discovered that there the best four ways to get new clients for your service business are:
- Your website
- Email marketing
- Google Ads
- Referrals.
Let me explain a little more about them and why they are so successful.
First, let me highlight that each of these methods is a form of ‘Attraction Marketing’. What this means is that someone finds you at the precise moment in time that they are ready to buy your services and gives you a call. Perfect!
Some of the methods above that I mention are not in the ‘Attraction Marketing’ camp, but instead fall firmly into the ‘Interruption Marketing’ category. For example, someone is reading their daily newspaper, not with the sole intention of finding a legal service (which I was promoting) but to read their daily paper.
The chances of them putting down their ‘wheatochuffs’ breakfast cereal to call for legal assistance is very slight, which is why it is a less effective form of generating new clients.
Likewise, if someone is watching their favourite soap, for example Corrers/Coronation Street and sees an advertisement for a law firm, how many rush to pick up the telephone?
I can tell you that, actually, quite a few do. However, not all leads are created equal, and what you find with ‘interruption marketing’ leads is that they are generally a lot lower quality than ‘attraction marketing’ leads.
Lower quality leads means that you need many more of them to generate any reasonable volume of new clients.
Now that I have explained why ‘interruption marketing’ methods of marketing such as TV, Radio, Facebook (and other social media platforms) are much less effective, let’s look at the best forms of marketing; the ‘attraction marketing’ methods.
Your website
Let’s imagine that your ideal client is looking for help with the precise service that you provide.
She heads to Google and types in your service name plus the town where she lives, which also happens to be the town that you service. It seems that you have done your job well and she finds you at the top of Google. She likes your website and as you have made it so easy for her to do so, she gets in touch with you.
You do a stellar job on the telephone and she asks you to help her.
Simple, isn’t it? This is what your website should be doing all day, every day, for you.
If it isn’t, you might want to read my book, a bestseller on Amazon, entitled More Clients From Your Website:>>
Google Ads
If you get some clients from your website, but not as many as you would like, then Google Ads is the fastest way to dramatically generate more clients for you.
The reason that it makes Google more than 16 billion dollars per quarter is that it works for Google but also for every business owner using it.
Someone heads to Google, types in your service, sees your advertisement and clicks on it.
People forget the genius of the Google Ads business model. Before Google came along you had to pay for your advertisement whether it produced any enquiries for your services or not. Google comes along and says “Nah, that method is old hat. You just pay us every time that your advertisement works, for each click through to your website.”
If it didn’t work, you didn’t pay. But it worked and continues to do so for the millions of businesses who rely on it every month to generate new clients for them.
In my opinion, it is the best method for generating new clients QUICKLY.

Email Marketing
Email marketing is my second favourite form of marketing after Google Ads.
Whilst it may seem like ‘interruption marketing’, the method that I teach my clients for using it is that they only add people to their email list who are interested in their services.
Many people talk about buying email marketing lists and hitting them cold. I cannot stand that and do not recommend it. That is ‘interruption marketing’.
What I teach is offering someone an “item of value” for which they are prepared to exchange their email address with you in exchange for it. They find you at the time that they are researching your service, download your “Item of value” and then, because you are a good service business owner and you are serious about growing your business, you keep in touch with them every single week until such time as they are ready to buy your services.
Guess what happens at this point? Because you have kept in touch with them and convinced them of your expertise, you are the only person providing your type of service that they contact. You have eliminated your competition!
Email marketing is brilliant!
If you are not yet doing it, or are doing it but it isn’t producing a steady flow of new clients, download my email marketing blueprint by clicking the button below:
Referral Marketing
Referrals are fantastic because someone asks a person they already trust to recommend someone and when they do, naturally the person chooses that person to help them.
It is ‘attraction marketing’ because they are actively seeking your services and are delivered to you by a trusted friend.
Which is why it surprises me when I ask a business owner which forms of marketing are working well for him/her, and he/she replies by saying referrals.
The surprise for me is that I next ask them what they do every month to grow their referrals and they say ‘nothing’.
If this applies to you, putting in place an active referral plan can make a dramatic difference to your business.
